It is not yet known whether they will be sold in packs of five, in the colors of the Olympic rings. It is also unclear why the figures differ by more than 100,000 units depending on the source of the information, but the message is uniform: so that there are no blind spots to preserve the health of athletes competing during the Olympic Games. Paris this summer, they will have condoms in astronomical quantities at their disposal.

According to Laurent Michaud, the director of the Olympic village cited par Sky News, who insists on the status of Paris as the “capital of love” in his article, there will be 300,000 condoms for the 14,500 Olympic athletes expected this summer. “Friendliness is important,” Michaud explains to the British channel, detailing everything the organizing committee has put in place to ensure the athletes are “comfortable and enthusiastic.”

For his part, AFP quotes Laurent Dalard, who is responsible for coordinating first aid and health risks for the Paris Olympics organizing committee, detailing the distribution of nearly 200,000 male and 20,000 female condoms for prevent sexually transmitted infections. “What we are seeing independently of the Olympics is rather an increase in the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections in the population,” explains Dalard.

Leaflets will be distributed and posters will be posted within the Olympic Village polyclinic, located in Saint-Denis, to raise awareness among athletes from all countries. There will also be plans for HIV testing within this polyclinic. 10,000 latex-free condoms and 20,000 oral dams (square latex used for oral sex) were also ordered.

Nearly 14,500 athletes and their support are expected in July in Paris at the Olympic village. But making a ratio between the number of athletes present and the number of condoms to deduce information on sexual relations within the Olympic village does not necessarily make sense: a member of the Cojo management had confided ago several months to AFP that certain products available in the village, such as bandages, were sometimes taken by athletes or their loved ones and then taken home.

In 2021, the Tokyo Olympics took place in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic and placed under the sign of extreme health precautions: sexual relations were rather discouraged and 100,000 condoms (only) had been distributed. Or four times less than in Rio in 2016 (450,000 condoms).
