Four more deaths were claimed by Hurricane Milton, which battered Florida with strong winds, dangerously high waves and flooding.
The death toll now stands at eight, after authorities in Florida reported four deaths earlier today, CNN reported.
One person died in Ormond Beach after a tree fell on them, Volusia County Emergency Management Director Clint Mecham said.
Two people died in St. Petersburg. Authorities do not know the exact cause of their deaths, but believe it was storm-related.
At least five people have died in St. Lucie County. Nine tornadoes hit the county Wednesday afternoon US time.
More than 3.1 million homes and businesses are still without power in areas affected by the storm. According to the governor of Florida, however, the shock wave was weaker than that of Hurricane Helen, which hit Florida in late September.
On Thursday, US President Joe Biden said it was too early to fully assess the damage in Florida, but added that he believed the measures taken by authorities had had an impact on saving lives.
“There are still very dangerous conditions in the state,” Biden said from the White House on Thursday. “People should wait to get permission from authorities before going out or returning to their homes.”
