At the first tuna auction of the new year held in Japan, a bluefin tuna was sold for 207 million yen (about 1.94 billion won).

According to Japan’s NHK on the 5th (local time), a 276kg bluefin tuna from Omasan, Aomori Prefecture was auctioned for 207 million yen at Toyosu Market, a seafood wholesale market in Tokyo.

This bluefin tuna was jointly won by a restaurant company and a seafood wholesaler in Japan. The two companies purchased tuna at the highest price at the beginning of the year for five consecutive years.

This winning bid is the second highest since 1999, when related auction records remain. It is about twice the highest price of 114.24 million yen (about 1.07 billion won) at the first tuna auction last year.

The highest price ever was 333.6 million yen (about 3.12 billion won) in 2019. From 2021 to 2023, when the coronavirus was rampant, it was traded between 10 million and 30 million yen.

The CEO of the company that purchased the highest price tuna that day said, “Tuna is an item for good luck,” and added, “I won the auction with the idea of making everyone smile with food.”
