The Icelandic Meteorological Office said in a statement that “a volcanic eruption began in Sondnokágígár, near Stora Scovil, at 23:14 GMT” on Wednesday.
This is the seventh volcanic eruption that the country has seen within one year.
Live television images showed lava flowing along a horizontal fissure.
In response to a question on public radio Ras2, Benedikt Ovegsson, an expert at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, said that the eruption does not pose a threat to any infrastructure at the moment.
A civil defense helicopter with specialized experts on board is scheduled to fly over the area, with the aim of predicting the extent of the eruption.
This is the seventh eruption in this region since December, the last one dating back to the end of August and occurring on the Reykjavík Peninsula itself, where Reykjavík International Airport is located.
There had been no volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula for eight hundred years until March 2021.
Iceland is home to 33 active volcanic systems, more than any other European country.
