Madurai: The Central Government has ordered the Madurai branch of the High Court to consider the case to amend the rules to post the name of the customer and Hallmark registration number on the website while selling ‘Hallmark’ gold jewellery.

Petition filed by Ajith Kumar from Theni: To ensure the quality of gold jewellery, it will undergo testing at authorized hallmark centres. It will be given registration number and separate stamp. This information will be uploaded on BIS website.

These procedures must be followed by those engaged in the sale of jewellery. While selling gold jewellery, buyer’s name, hallmark registration number, date, type of jewelery and bill number should be uploaded on BIS website.

This will prevent the sale of fake jewellery. I have sent a petition to the Central Consumer Affairs Department seeking amendment in the grading rules accordingly. It should be ordered to be considered. This is what he had said in the petition.

Judge G.R. Swaminathan, who heard the case, ordered that the Central Consumer Affairs Department’s Pro-Secretary should consider the petition on its merits and issue an appropriate order.
