What does the Chancellor actually do at the weekend? In a podcast, Olaf Scholz talks about how he likes to spend his free time and his breakfast recipe.

As Chancellor, Olaf Scholz doesn’t sleep much – but that’s actually against his nature. “I’m a late riser by nature, but my life has turned out differently,” said Scholz in the “And what do you actually do on the weekend” podcast from “Zeit”. On vacation and when he has no obligations, he will definitely sleep longer. But he never uses the snooze button on his alarm clock, said the Chancellor.

According to Scholz, he prefers to be barefoot in his apartment. “When I get home I change straight away, that’s the first thing I do, then I wear some kind of jeans.” When asked whether he sometimes wore sweatpants at home in Potsdam, Scholz said: “No sweatpants.” He sticks entirely to Karl Lagerfeld.

The Hamburg fashion designer made a devastating judgment about the item of clothing with the sentence “Anyone who wears sweatpants has lost control of their life.”

Scholz doesn’t eat breakfast every day, as he reveals. At the weekend he has porridge. The Chancellor recipe is made with water and a little salt, and he likes to have blueberries on top.

Sport also plays a role in the politician’s weekend – he likes to go jogging in the morning. “At some point in my early 40s, my wife said this couldn’t go on like this anymore, and then I started jogging.”

Scholz has been married to the SPD politician Britta Ernst since 1998. According to his own statement, the Chancellor was unsportsmanlike in his past. “I always had a four minus and actually just out of politeness, so that it fit in with the rest of the report card, which was quite good, the teachers said, we won’t put a five there now.”

Today the Chancellor also keeps fit by cross-country skiing, on the water or on the rowing machine.
