The protest takes to the streets. After the vote in Parliament on the Immigration law, hundreds of people demonstrated Wednesday evening in several cities against the text. In Rennes, demonstrators, including many young people according to AFP, marched peacefully shortly after 6:30 p.m. towards the town hall then to Place Sainte-Anne with cries of “withdrawal, withdrawal of the Macron-Le Pen law” or “It’s not the immigrants who are too many, it’s Darmanin and the fascists”.

The main unions, as well as the major left-wing parties, had called for this rally against the “capitulation of Macronie to the far right”. This demonstration brought together between 1,800 and 2,500 people, indicates France Blue. “I find that this law is against all the foundations of democracy,” explained a participant quoted by AFP.

Similar demonstrations took place in Dijon, Besançon, Chambéry and Grenoble, in particular. In Lille, at least 300 people, including many activists from left-wing organizations, gathered on Wednesday evening at Place de la République, noted an AFP journalist. West France counted around fifty people gathered in Saint-Brieuc.

Rouen, Limoges, Strasbourg… this Thursday

The protest should not weaken this Thursday. New gatherings are planned, such as in Rouen (at 6 p.m. in front of the courthouse) or in Caen (at 6 p.m., at the university) at the call of the unions. In Limoges, an appointment is made at the prefecture at 6:30 p.m. against “the government’s racist law”.

This Thursday morning, the FSE student union is blocking part of the University of Strasbourg, it indicates on its X account (formerly Twitter). He also calls for a meeting on Place de la République at 7 p.m.

CGT number one Sophie Binet called this Thursday for “civil disobedience” in the face of the immigration law which calls into question, according to her, “all our republican principles”. “The CGT wants to ensure that there are large-scale initiatives to mobilize those who do not recognize themselves in this lepenized France,” summarizes the trade unionist.

The text was voted on Tuesday evening after having been largely revised by the Senate (with a majority on the right) and in the Joint Parliamentary Committee. The right largely contributed to strengthening the text initially desired by the government after long negotiations. In particular, it obtained the establishment of annual migration quotas and the tightening of family reunification (a foreigner must prove a length of stay of twenty-four months and a certain level of resources).

The Constitutional Council, seized by Emmanuel Macron, the left and associations, examines the text from this Wednesday. He could revoke several measures, while Élisabeth Borne and Gérald Darmanin themselves recognized that some could be contrary to the French Constitution. The right calls for “respecting the vote” of Parliament.
