Germans are eating more and more frozen pizzas. According to Statista, in 2022, 395,061 tons of pizza stored in freezer counters were sold in Germany and the per capita consumption of this product was approximately 4.82 kg. Almost five kilos per person. And the segment – experts say – is growing. The big players in the world of pizzas that can be removed from the freezer and baked are Wagner and Dr. Oetker (Cameo in Italy), with proposals that often leave Italians living in Germany perplexed. Last but not least the newly created pretzel pizza with the brown crust, prepared with the dough of the type of bread of the same name. No one, however, until now had dared to transform frozen pizza into a message with a strong social value.

A pizza that becomes a statement and a protest sign at the same time. A lively company from Baden-Württemberg, Followfood, thought of it and has been bringing organic pizza to the frozen food counters of Rewe supermarkets for a few months. “Different” which on the packaging screams: Vielfalt ist ein Natur-Gesetz, diversity is a law of nature. Because this colorful vegetarian pizza with tomatoes, spinach, peppers, red onion and corn, as well as tantalizing the palate, stimulates the desire to commit to a just cause.

1% of the proceeds from the sales of the product are donated to #Queeramnesty, the Amnesty International Germany group that fights for the rights of queer people, dedicating itself in particular to the protection of people persecuted or threatened because of their sexual identity, to support asylum procedures for queer people whose safety is threatened in their country of origin due to their sexual identity, and to support the medical treatment of people living with HIV or AIDS while respecting human rights.

«For us it is clear that the time has come for companies to take a position on this important issue and set an example for a more colorful and respectful society», says the Friedrichshafen company which had the idea of this operation which is part of in its mission to focus on sustainable food products and to support social projects and activities for environmental protection.

The “Diversi” organic pizza is in fact not a unique case in the Followfood brand product catalogue, it is accompanied by frozen organic pizza “Anti-racists” (also in this case a bit of Italian sounding never hurts when talking about pizzas), with spicy dried tomatoes and mozzarella, which invites respectful coexistence, a particularly felt theme in Germany where in recent weeks a million have taken to the streets people, to protest against the plans for forced “Re-migration” of millions of immigrants, secretly drawn up by the far-right Afd party.

For each sale of this spicy pizza, 1% of the proceeds go to the Exit Deutschland association, which through de-radicalization programs with the advice of various experts helps those who want to abandon far-right movements and start a new life.

In this case too, the message is clear on the packaging: Scharf auf Toleranz, “committed to tolerance”, with a nice play on the word “scharf” which also means spicy, like the flavor of pizza.

And in this whole story there is also a bit of Italy: both frozen pizzas are produced by hand and cooked in a wood-fired oven in our country with renewable energy and “water from the Italian Prealps”, “by a family business “, which in German minds evokes images of pizza chefs in any Marechiaro or Da Gennaro pizzeria, in reality refers to Roncadin di Meduno, a successful Friulian company, 155 million in turnover in 2022 and over 700 employees, which distributes products abroad 81% of its frozen pizza production.
