Strengthening Latvia’s eastern border could provide an economic advantage to the areas where it will be carried out. This was stated by the commander of the country’s National Armed Forces (NAF), Leonid Kalnins, writes LSM, reports Day.Az with reference to Lenta.ru.
“All the materials we need will be ordered from local manufacturers. To some extent this will affect the growth in the number of jobs. Of the amount allocated by the Cabinet of Ministers to carry out our tasks, most of it will be spent here in Latgale to ensure production these materials,” he said.
At the same time, Kalnins noted that the mayor of the second largest city in the country, Daugavpils, spoke out against the construction of the defense line. Among the consequences of the militarization of the region, the head of the city named the decline of the economy, which will lead to scaring away investors.
The commander of the NAF also emphasized that Latvia does not plan to create minefields on the border with Russia. According to him, we are talking about the construction of defensive structures: concrete cubes, “dragon teeth”, metal hedgehogs and barbed wire products.
