Dol Purnima today. One of the most important festivals of traditional Bengali Hindus is Dol Purnima or Dol Utsav.
Dol is called the festival of colours, which is celebrated on the full moon tithi of the month of Phalgun. Somewhere this Dol Purnima is called Dol Yatra. Again Falguni Purnima is also called Dol Purnima.
Mahaprabhu Sri Chaitanya was born on this Purnima Tithi, hence Dol Purnima is called Gauri Purnima. Dol Purnima is a very mythical event. On this tithi, Shri Krishna played Holi with Abir and Gulal in Vrindavan, along with Randha and his gopis and from that event the dol game originated.
The festival is popularly known as Shri Krishna’s Dola Yatra, but is also known as Dol Utsav in West Bengal, Madras, Orissa, and ‘Holi’ in North, West and Central India and Nepal. And in some places this festival is also called spring festival. From Dwapar Yuga, Randha-Krishna used to sprinkle flowers and celebrate Dola festival. In the evolution of time, ‘Abir’ has come in place of Pushparenu. And that’s why the color game will be popular today.
On the occasion of Dol Purnima, Hindus are spending a busy time today with various arrangements including puja, home yajna, distribution of prasad in various temples across the country including the capital Dhaka. This festival will continue from morning till afternoon across the country. Hindus celebrate this festival by smearing each other with Abir.
Dol Utsav and Kirtan have been organized at Dhakeshwari National Temple under the initiative of Mahanagara Sarvajanin Puja Committee. Pooja and kirtan have started from this morning.
