We can record more than ⁢a billion euros in profits in the first half of 2024 and be regularly cited as an example of companies that manage to achieve «super ⁢profits» and have an impact in the fight against precariousness. On Friday 6 December, in the arenc district of‍ Marseille, in the presence of Brigitte Macron, the regional prefect Christophe Mirmand, importent local elected representatives and the singer Soprano, the CMA CGM foundation, the charitable branch of the shipowner, inaugurated its “solidarity warehouse”. Five thousand square meters of renovated port hangar,⁤ located a few tens of meters from the group’s world headquarters, capable of storing 3,200 tons of food. ‌An extraordinary project with which the group replaces the skills of the public authorities.

This solidarity ship, unique in france, will enable five⁢ large associations fighting food insecurity to transform their ‍working conditions in the Bouches-du-Rhône. And, thanks to cost sharing, redirect part of the budget previously spent on rent and logistics towards the distribution of food to populations‌ who need it.

Wave‍ of requests

In a city where more ⁣than 200,000 people live below the poverty line, according to the “Report on poverty in ‌France” of⁣ the Inequalities Observatory published on Tuesday 3 December, each of these associations ⁤witnesses a wave of requests. For them,‌ the CMA CGM ‌proposal was not to be rejected. “Even if we had combined all our resources, we would ‌not‍ have been able to take advantage of a warehouse like this,” observes Alain Evezard.

In ‍addition to the quality⁤ of ‌the‌ services, the‌ associations praise the way in which ‍the foundation’s ⁣teams‌ took into account their specificities during the gestation of the project. “We wanted to preserve‌ our independence, our way ⁣of doing things… ⁤They understood it,” This is demonstrated by Farida Benchaa, general secretary of the departmental federation of Secours populaire, who estimates the annual savings she will achieve at 40,000 euros.
