Four students of the career of Industrial Maintenance Engineering of Inacap Talca obtained first place in the 3rd National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition with its Autotron projectan automated log sorting machine, designed to optimize processes in the logging sector.
The initiative, promoted from the subject of Innovation and Entrepreneurship under the guidance of teacher Pablo Cornejo, It had the valuable technical support of the Mechanics and Automation professors, Víctor Huerta and Fabián Toledo. The project, which began as a small-scale experimental prototype, has evolved into a functional prototype that is currently being implemented in a local sawmill in the commune of Talca.
The project has reached a TRL 7 technological maturity level, which means that it is already in the demonstration phase in a real operating surroundings. Currently, the students work in collaboration with the Talquina company Maderas Prosperidad to carry out pilot tests and adjust the final design in a productive line of the sawmill.
“The dedication, innovative spirit and focus on solving specific needs of the territories demonstrate the transformative potential of our students,” highlighted the vice-rector of Inacap Talca, Soledad Schott. The authority also highlighted the importance of teamwork and the ability of these young people to generate high-impact solutions, calling them an inspiring example for the entire educational community.
The Autotron team is made up of students Esteban Díaz, jeyson Barrueto, Mauricio toledo and Sebastián Suárez. It also has the contribution of Nicolás Villas and Carlos García, students of the Title Seminar subject, who contributed to the development of the applied project.
INNOVATION THAT TRANSFORMS
Autotron represents a disruptive solution for small and medium-sized sawmills, making automated technology that was previously exclusive to large industries available to SMEs. This achievement not onyl consolidates INACAP talca as a hotbed of innovation, but also reaffirms the commitment of its students and teachers to sustainable development and regional progress.
with the support of the local industry and the enthusiasm of its creators, Autotron is moving towards its consolidation as a benchmark in affordable automation. The first steps have already been taken, and the future promises a positive impact both on the productivity of the sawmills and on the strengthening of the local economy.
How can mentorship and industry partnerships enhance student-led innovations like the Autotron?
Interview with Innovation Expert on Autotron: revolutionizing the Logging Sector
Time.news: Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with [expert’s Name], an esteemed expert in engineering innovations, notably in the logging and automation sectors. Welcome!
Q: First off, congratulations to the talented students of INACAP Talca for winning first place in the 3rd National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition with their Autotron project.Could you explain what the Autotron is and its significance in the logging industry?
[Expert’s Response]: thank you! The Autotron is an automated log sorting machine that has been created specifically to optimize processes in the logging sector. Its significance lies in its ability to bring automated technology, which was previously the realm of large industries, to small and medium-sized sawmills. This democratization of technology is transformative—it boosts efficiency and productivity while also addressing the specific needs of local communities involved in logging.
Q: It is indeed mentioned that the project has achieved a TRL 7 technological maturity level. Can you elaborate on what that means, and why it’s vital for a project like Autotron?
[Expert’s Response]: A TRL 7 indicates that the technology has been demonstrated in a real operational environment, which is particularly crucial for projects intended for practical applications like Autotron. This stage allows the developers to test and refine the system with real data and feedback, ensuring that the end product meets market demands and can operate effectively in a sawmill. It elevates the credibility of the innovation, making it more attractive for potential investors and industry stakeholders.
Q: The project evolved under the guidance of experienced instructors and through collaborative efforts with local companies. How critically important is this mentorship and partnership aspect in fostering innovation among students?
[Expert’s Response]: Mentorship and collaboration are absolutely vital. The support from experienced faculty like Pablo Cornejo, Víctor Huerta, and Fabián Toledo provides students with invaluable insights and technical knowledge. Likewise, partnerships with local companies such as Maderas Prosperidad enable students to align their projects with industry needs and practical realities. This cooperation not only enhances the educational experience but also nurtures skills that students will carry into their professional careers.
Q: vice-rector soledad Schott highlighted the innovative spirit and teamwork of the students as integral to their success. What role does teamwork play in engineering projects, especially in the context of innovation and entrepreneurship?
[Expert’s Response]: Teamwork is crucial in engineering and especially relevant in innovation and entrepreneurship. Diverse skill sets and perspectives contribute to problem-solving capabilities. In the case of the Autotron project, the collaboration among team members and their willingness to contribute their unique strengths allowed for a more robust design process. This collective effort strengthens the outcome and enhances the learning experience, preparing students for future collaboration in their careers.
Q: how do you see the potential impact of Autotron on the local economy and the logging sector?
[Expert’s Response]: Autotron has the potential to significantly enhance productivity in local sawmills, which can lead to increased profitability. As these smaller businesses adopt affordable automation technologies, they may experience operational efficiencies that were previously unattainable. This not only strengthens the local economy by enabling sawmills to compete more effectively but also ensures sustainable advancement within the region. It’s a perfect example of how education and local innovation can converge to create lasting positive change.
time.news: Thank you for your insights, [Expert’s Name]. The Autotron project exemplifies how the intersection of education, innovation, and local industry can lead to groundbreaking advancements in customary sectors. We look forward to seeing how these students continue to influence the future of logging and automation.
