Officially opened on the 3rd of next month
Incheon International Airport has completed construction of the 4th phase expansion facility and will leap forward to become the world’s third largest airport in terms of annual passenger capacity. With this expansion, Incheon Airport will be able to accommodate 40% more passengers (106 million) then before.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Incheon International Airport Corporation announced on this day that they will hold the ‘incheon Airport Phase 4 Grand Opening Event’ on the 29th. Incheon Airport expanded the 2nd passenger terminal through a 4-stage expansion and established a 4th runway and 75 new aprons. Annual passenger capacity increased by 37.7% from 77 million to 106 million. Passenger Terminal 1 and terminal 2 can each accommodate more than 50 million international passengers. Cargo handling capacity also increased to 6.3 million tons, and air logistics capacity also rose to the world’s second largest level.
In addition, smart security services have been strengthened to simplify the security screening and boarding process. The ‘Smart Pass’ system uses artificial intelligence (AI) and biometrics to easily verify identity. Facial recognition is performed based on smart pass and boarding pass information. You will be able to self-pass through the departure hall and boarding gate without having to check your passport and boarding pass multiple times. An automatic security screening system was also introduced to speed up security procedures, further reducing departure and entry times.
Cultural and artistic facilities were also created throughout the airport. The kinetic sculpture installed on the ceiling of the airport expansion area symbolizes a giant animal moving. The sculpture embodies endangered animals such as golden eagles and sea turtles, and has won the world’s top three design awards (Germany’s Red Dot/iF Award and U.S. IDEA). Additionally, outdoor gardens were created at both ends of the boarding area. The korean Garden (east side) embodies the royal garden of Changdeokgung Palace, and the Open Garden (west side) is a 1,650㎡ (approximately 500 pyeong) space covered with grass.
Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Park Sang-woo said, “This 4th phase expansion project will open the era of 100 million passengers and become a milestone toward a new emergency for the Republic of Korea.” He added, “We will carefully monitor it before and after the start of operation to ensure that we can provide services befitting the highest level of airport infrastructure.” “He said.
