An exception will be ships chartered before January 10, if they will be unloaded by March 12.

Indian refineries are preparing for talks on supplies from the Middle East, an official said.

Meanwhile, Indian banks will require certificates to guarantee that oil suppliers are not subject to sanctions.

Earlier on Monday, it became known that three tankers containing more than two million barrels of Russian oil are drifting east of China’s coast, as the port operator of Shandong province has banned the unloading of ships subject to sanctions.

On January 10, the USA imposed sanctions on the two largest Russian oil export companies – “Gazprom Neft” and “Surgutneftegas”. Sanctions have also been applied to the Russian shipping company “Sovkomflot”. The blacklist also includes 183 Russian “shadow fleet” tankers that fly under the flags of various countries and are used by Moscow to circumvent sanctions.

After Russia’s repeated invasion of Ukraine in 2022, India became the largest buyer of Russian oil, but the tightening of US sanctions has stopped trade and forced Indians to look for opportunities to buy oil in other regions, even though it is more expensive.
