Nearly 300 people participated in a march against insecurity in Latacungaprovince of Cotopaxi. Those who led the march were Alex Toapanta, president of the Indigenous and Peasant Movement of Cotopaxi (MICC); Lourdes Tibán, prefect of Cotopaxi; in addition to several community leaders.

The walk passed in front of the Latacunga judicial complex in order to shout slogans in favor of indigenous justice. Another request is that the National Service for Attention to Adults and Adolescent Offenders (SNAI) and the Presidency buy the inputs from small producers to prepare food for the convicts in the area’s prison.

“There are more than four thousand prisoners who are in the Cotopaxi prison. If the products to feed them were bought (here), the economic outlook that small producers would have would be different,” he assured.

However, the slogans were to demand greater attention from the state to increase security. In that order, it was emphasized that indigenous justice has increased in the province.

The MICC records 213 sentences from the year 2023. So far this year they do not have statistics yet, but Toapanta highlighted that the application of indigenous justice corresponds to the urban part of the Latacunga canton.

Hugo Arroyo, commander of Police in Cotopaxi, he noted that so far in 2024 there have been no violent deaths, although he added that there is an increase in the theft of vehicle accessories.
