We all get to deal with it in our lives: infectious diseases. Cold viruses, stomach flu and chicken pox; a small selection of the large number of infectious diseases. They have one thing in common; the disease is caused by a pathogen. Infections can often be prevented through good hygiene and infection prevention. In the infection prevention week of May 22-26, we would therefore like to pay some extra attention to infection prevention.

Bacteria, viruses and fungi
A pathogen is also called a microorganism. Examples include bacteria, viruses and fungi. You will not get sick from all micro-organisms. On the contrary, there are many micro-organisms that actually help people. For example, certain bacteria on the skin ensure that a pathogen cannot attach to the skin and you do not get sick.

What does the GGD do?
If a micro-organism is nevertheless pathogenic and poses a risk to public health, the GGD has a role to play in limiting the spread of the pathogen. In recent years, this has been visible in the fight against COVID-19, but smaller outbreaks of infectious diseases are also reported to the GGD.

The GGD also plays a role in the prevention of infectious diseases, which we call infection prevention. In the case of children, this is done, for example, by vaccinating in accordance with the National Immunization Programme. The GGD also carries out hygiene inspections at tattoo and piercing shops and asylum seekers centers with the aim of minimizing the risk of illness.

About Infection Prevention Week
The Regional Antibiotic Resistance Networks also have an extensive program with webinars, a quiz and a giveaway. More information about the national program can be found at www.infectiepreventieweek.nl.
