Internet outage will push Russia to create its own network

Experts believe that you need to have a “fallback”

On Tuesday, there was a failure in the work of many of the world’s sites. Among them are the largest media outlets, as well as the Internet versions of American and British television companies. And all due to the fact that the provider of cloud computing Fastly, whose information storage was used by many media, had technical problems. According to the MK expert, this event is a wake-up call.

It turns out that it is still possible to “chop off” the world wide web. And for this it is not at all necessary to quarrel with Roskomnadzor, as was the case with the popular social network. A banal technical malfunction in a provider’s work can act as the notorious switch, especially if most of the world’s media use its services for storing information.

On Tuesday, there was a failure in the work of most of the world’s most famous sites, including Bloomberg, BBC, CNN, The New York Times, The Guardian, Financial Times, The Independent.

When users tried to open their pages, the message appeared: “Error 503 Service unavailable.” Also, a malfunction occurred in the work of many well-known Internet services and payment systems in the world. By the evening, the Fastly provider, through whose fault there was such a global failure in the work of the sites, found and eliminated a technical problem. But the sediment, as they say, remained. What will happen if such falls of the Internet resume – after all, without it now, as without hands.

“In my opinion, this situation has meaningfully and intelligibly showed everyone why a sovereign Internet is needed,” says Nikita KULIKOV, director of PravoRobotov.

This is periodically discussed in the political space of Russia, but the matter has not gone further than talk so far. Moreover, many oppositionists believe that Runet is a surrogate for the World Wide Web and with its help the authorities want to deprive Russians of free access to information. In fact, access to information was blocked from the side from which they did not expect.

– We say: the world is multipolar, and at the same time we mean that the Internet gives us access to various sources of information. But at the same time, we forget that the Internet, no matter how huge and diverse this network is, has its points of power – the same hosting. And if something happens to them, then everything will be covered at once – access to databases, storage of personal information, to familiar services, and so on.

According to the expert, hosting, servers, where information of the same media is stored, do not belong to the state, they are served by commercial organizations. Clients go to who provides more favorable conditions. Apparently, Fastly had the most profitable ones, since all the largest American and British TV companies and websites are among its clients. However, there is a hole in the old woman. There was a technical failure, and the sites “lay down”, as well as a number of popular Internet services.

“There is only one conclusion from this – in case of at least such a technical failure, it is imperative to have your own backup infrastructure, to which you can quickly switch,” continues Kulikov. – Russia should have a sovereign Internet, its own information storages, servers, so as not to depend on anyone. This will protect us in the event of global technical problems, as happened today, and in the event of any next political sanctions. For example, if suddenly someone in the West wants to turn the switch and disconnect our country from the Internet. ”
