The man who stormed the stage of a conference center in Jaipur on this September day is a legend, at least that’s what the moderator announced, who is however one of his employees. Canadian Bruce Poon Tip, who with his T-shirt, jeans, sneakers and heady enthusiasm looks much younger than his 57 years, founded the travel company G Adventures in 1990 and the Planeterra Foundation in 2003 – and invited people to the annual GX Summit, a tourism convention, where G Adventures celebrates itself and selects employees. This time the setting is India. G Adventures considers itself the market leader for small group adventure travel, supporting a variety of social projects through Planetterra. We had the opportunity to speak with Bruce Poon Tip in India.
Interview with Bruce Poon Tip: Revolutionizing Adventure Travel
Time.news Editor: Welcome, Bruce Poon Tip! It’s an honor to have you here with us. As the founder of G Adventures and the Planeterra Foundation, you’ve had a significant impact on the adventure travel industry. Can you share how your journey began and what inspired you to create G Adventures?
Bruce Poon Tip: Thank you for the warm welcome! My journey began back in 1990 when I realized that travel could be more than just leisure; it could connect people and create meaningful experiences. The idea was to offer small group adventure travel that not only provided unforgettable experiences but also respected local cultures and environments. It was about transforming the way we travel and building a sense of community among travelers.
Time.news Editor: That’s an inspiring vision! You recently hosted the GX Summit in Jaipur, which is a key event for G Adventures. What were some of the highlights from this year’s summit, and how does it reflect your company’s mission?
Bruce Poon Tip: The GX Summit is always a thrilling experience. This year, being in India added a unique flavor. We celebrated our employees and shared innovative ideas on how to enhance our adventure travel offerings further. One highlight was the discussions on sustainability and how we can work together to support social projects through the Planeterra Foundation. It’s crucial for us to not just take but give back to the communities we interact with while traveling.
Time.news Editor: Speaking of sustainability, how does G Adventures ensure that its tours benefit local communities and environments?
Bruce Poon Tip: Great question! We focus on small group sizes that reduce our environmental footprint and partner with local businesses to ensure that the money spent stays within the community. Through the Planeterra Foundation, we’ve developed programs supporting education, women’s empowerment, and social entrepreneurship in travel destinations. Our travelers also engage in meaningful volunteer opportunities that allow them to contribute directly.
Time.news Editor: Travelers are becoming increasingly concerned about the impact of their journeys. What practical advice can you offer to those wanting to make responsible travel choices?
Bruce Poon Tip: My advice would be to choose operators who prioritize sustainability and community welfare. Seek out tours that support local artisans and businesses. Additionally, travelers should educate themselves about the destinations they visit and consider participating in responsible tourism initiatives. Small changes, like choosing less commercialized routes or engaging in local customs, can make a big difference.
Time.news Editor: Lastly, what do you see as the future of adventure travel, especially post-pandemic?
Bruce Poon Tip: The future of adventure travel looks promising. People are eager to explore again, but they are also looking for authenticity and connection over simply ticking off boxes on a travel list. The trend towards smaller, more personalized experiences will continue to grow. I believe that travelers will prioritize sustainability, community engagement, and fulfillment in their journeys moving forward.
Time.news Editor: Thank you, Bruce, for sharing your insights! It’s clear that G Adventures is not just leading the way in adventure travel but also setting a standard for how tourism can create positive change in our world.
Bruce Poon Tip: Thank you! It’s a pleasure to share our vision, and I’m excited for the future of travel!
