Apple’s latest iOS 26 update introduces a clever new feature for airpods Pro 2, pro 3, and AirPods 4, automatically pausing audio when sleep is detected.
Apple has quietly rolled out a new sleep detection feature for select AirPods models, offering a convenient solution for those who frequently drift off while listening to music, podcasts, or audiobooks. The feature, enabled through iPhone settings, utilizes the AirPods’ built-in sensors to identify when a user has fallen asleep and subsequently pauses media playback.
How Does AirPods Sleep Detection Work?
The new functionality was implemented with a recent iOS 26 software update, but remains disabled by default.Users must navigate to their iPhone’s settings, select their connected AirPods, and scroll down to activate “Pause Media When Falling Asleep.” Once enabled, the AirPods will automatically pause audio when they detect the user has entered a sleep state.
One user described the experience as particularly useful during travel. “If you’re like me, the one place you can fall asleep upright is on an airplane,” they noted, adding that they often find themselves waking up several episodes into a show after dozing off. The feature proved reliable during testing, pausing media playback a few minutes after the user fell asleep while watching a TV show on a MacBook.
Accelerometer, Not Heart rate, is Key
Interestingly, the AirPods appear to rely on an accelerometer – a motion-sensing component – rather than a heart rate sensor to determine sleep. This is as the AirPods 4 and AirPods pro 2 models lack in-ear heart rate monitoring capabilities. The accelerometer is the same sensor responsible for the existing “wear detection” feature, which pauses audio when an earbud is removed.
This approach mirrors how the Apple Watch detects sleep, utilizing a lack of movement as a primary indicator. Though, unlike the Apple Watch, the AirPods Pro 3 do not passively track heart rate. Therefore, users who wish to monitor their heart rate while sleeping with AirPods Pro 3 must initiate a workout within
