TEHRAN: Women journalists jailed in Iran for reporting on the death of Mahsa Amini, who died while in the custody of the morality police for not wearing the proper headscarf, have been released from jail. Nilufar Hamedi (31) and Elahi Mohammadi (36) were released on bail. Both were imprisoned for a year.
On September 17, 2022, twenty-two-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was taken into custody by Iran’s ‘Morality Police’, ‘Gashte Irshad (Guidance Patrol),’ died. According to the police, Amini died due to a heart attack and it was due to the health problems of the young woman. But the representatives of the United Nations human rights group stated that the reason for Amini’s death was the beating of the moral police.
Mahsa Amini’s death was first reported to the outside world by Nilufar Hamidi, a journalist from the Iranian newspaper Shargh. Nilufar also shared on social media with the note that the black dress of mourning is our national flag. The post was sharing the picture of Mahsa Amini’s father and grandmother mourning the death of their daughter.
Elahi Mohammadi also wrote an article about Mahsa’s death after attending his funeral. After the news came out, there was a protest in Iran over the death of Amini. Women protested by publicly throwing off their hijab and cutting their hair.
After the protest became heavy, two journalists were arrested on the charge of doing activities affecting national security. Both were sentenced to imprisonment for thirteen and twelve years respectively.
