Editor: Thank you for joining us today. We have with us Dr. Samira Al-Hakim, a renowned expert in interfaith dialogue and religious coexistence. Recently, Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani emphasized Iraq’s past significance as a center for various religions during his meeting in Madrid with Father Angel García. Dr. Al-Hakim, how notable is this acknowledgment in today’s socio-political climate?
Dr. Al-Hakim: Thank you for having me. Prime Minister Al-sudani’s acknowledgment of Iraq as a center for various religions is profoundly significant, especially in a world where globalization frequently enough leads to polarization. By recognizing Iraq’s rich tapestry of faiths,he is reminding us of the importance of dialogue and unity among different religious communities. In a time characterized by increasing hate speech and intolerance, such statements can foster a spirit of coexistence and mutual respect.
Editor: Al-Sudani also highlighted the role of clerics in combating hate speech. Can you elaborate on what practical measures clerics can take to promote peace and coexistence?
Dr.Al-Hakim: Absolutely. Clerics can play a crucial role by engaging in community outreach programs that emphasize shared values among different faiths. They can host interfaith dialogues, where representatives from various religions come together to discuss common challenges and aspirations. Additionally, clerics should leverage social media platforms to spread positive messages about unity, thereby countering hate speech effectively. Collaborative humanitarian efforts can also strengthen bonds among diverse communities.
Editor: During the meeting, the Prime Minister discussed the ongoing violence in Gaza and Lebanon. How do these international conflicts impact religious coexistence within Iraq?
Dr. Al-Hakim: Conflicts like those in Gaza and Lebanon can have ripple effects, possibly exacerbating sectarian tensions within Iraq. The portrayal of these events can lead to heightened emotions and divisiveness. However, by publicly condemning violence and advocating for peace – as Al-Sudani did – leaders can counteract this narrative. The focus should remain on promoting empathy, and understanding, and providing platforms for dialogues that address the grievances shared by all affected communities.
Editor: in your experience, what are some examples of accomplished interfaith initiatives in Iraq that demonstrate this ideal of coexistence?
Dr. Al-Hakim: One notable initiative is the “Iraq for All” program, which involves youth from diverse backgrounds participating in community service projects. They work side by side in schools and hospitals, creating bonds that break down religious barriers. Another successful example is the annual “Peace and Coexistence” forum, where leaders and influential figures from various religious communities gather to discuss strategies for harmony. These grassroots movements are vital for cultivating a culture of peace.
Editor: What message would you like to extend to our readers regarding the importance of religious coexistence in today’s global landscape?
Dr. Al-Hakim: I urge readers to value the diversity of beliefs as a strength rather than a division. By fostering open-minded discussions and mutual respect, we pave the way for a more peaceful world. Each of us has the opportunity to be ambassadors of coexistence in our communities. Let us stand against hate speech and work collaboratively towards peace and understanding.
Editor: Thank you, Dr. Al-Hakim, for your valuable insights. Your expertise helps highlight the importance of religious coexistence in both Iraq and the broader global context.
