/ The Undersecretary for Extraction Affairs at the Ministry of Oil, Bassem Muhammad Khudair, confirmed on Saturday that the Iraqi government aspires to achieve self-sufficiency in producing gas and exporting it outside the country.

This came in a speech he delivered during his attendance at the first conference on oil and gas in the Arab world and its future prospects, which was held at the Al-Mansour Hotel for the period from January 27-28, 2024.

Khudair delivered the representative speech, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Oil, at the conference held under the slogan (Hydrocarbon wealth is the guarantee of a smooth transition towards renewable energy and a sustainable economy).

The Undersecretary for Extraction Affairs said: Today, the Iraqi oil file is witnessing rapid and effective movement in the oil and gas sectors, and within the ambitious strategic governmental vision of the country that aims to increase production and export capacities, increase oil reserves, compensate for depleted ones, and end the file of burned gas and gas imports, with high confidence. We aspire to export gas and achieve self-sufficiency for our country.”

The oil official invited international companies qualified to participate in the competition for projects in the fifth and sixth licensing rounds, adding: We, as the Ministry of Oil, will support everyone who wants to participate with us in a pioneering Iraqi oil industry amid an attractive and stable work environment.

Khudair continued by saying: Our government and ministry will spare no support or support to activate the file of oil conferences and workshops, in the service of our country.

Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani confirms that his government is determined to eliminate the burning of natural gas associated with the oil extraction process, and says that he is determined to make Iraq “active” in the global gas market.

The Iraqi Oil Minister, Hayyan Abdul Ghani, confirms on several occasions that the ministry is working to achieve self-sufficiency in gas during the next five years.

Despite Iraq’s small gas production, it ranks 12th with the largest gas reserves in the world, at 130.5 trillion cubic feet per day, according to data from the British oil company BP for the year 2016. Iraq consumes most of its gas to feed power stations, while it imports its remaining need from Iran.
