The elephant Lakshmi, which was brought to this temple in 1996, has been the favorite elephant of Puducherry devotees. Lakshmi, who was said to be suffering from diabetes recently, fainted during the elephant walk exercise and died on the spot.
Earlier, Lakshmi the elephant rested for 15 days in the kennel in the Vedapureeswarar temple complex. The elephant did not come to the Lakshmi temple during this retirement period. Visitors were also told not to look at the elephant. Apart from fruits, kali, palm, coconut, royal tree leaves and nutritive medicines were given to Lakshmi.
Devotees, Deputy Governor of Puduwa Tamilisai Soundarrajan, former Chief Minister of Puduwa Narayanasamy and others came and paid their respects to Lakshmi Yani, who fainted and died during the walking exercise.
Puducherry Conservator of Forests Vanjulavalli has said that the reason for the death of this elephant was heart attack. And the forest activist Sadiq, who has given an exclusive interview to our Behindwoods channel, has said that junk food is the reason for the elephant’s death. He also said, “The reason why the elephant is sick is because of the food like idli, dosa, chapati, and fried balls brought home by the devotees.” He said.
