Israeli armed forces announced the possibility of eliminating the leader of the Palestinian radical movement Hamas Yahi Sinwara in the Gaza Strip.
As Day.Az reports, this information was presented in a press release from the Israeli army.
“Three terrorists were killed during operations in the Gaza Strip. The Israel Defense Forces and the General Security Service are checking whether one of those killed could have been Yahya Sinwar. At present, the identification of the terrorists has not been confirmed,” the statement said.
According to the press service, “no traces of the presence of hostages were found in the building where the terrorists were neutralized.” Earlier it was reported that Sinwar was hiding in the underground tunnels of Gaza and was allegedly surrounded by Israeli hostages.
Israeli troops in the area “continue to operate with caution,” the military added. More detailed information will be published later, the press service indicated.
Meanwhile, Sky News Arabia cites a source reporting the death of Sinwar.
Yahya Sinwar is a native of the Gaza Strip and one of the founders of the military wing of Hamas. He spent more than 22 years in Israeli prisons and was released in 2011 as part of a swap that saw 1,027 Palestinian prisoners released in exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, captured in 2006. In 2017, Sinwar became the leader of Hamas in Gaza, and in early August of this year he was elected as the new head of the organization’s Politburo, replacing Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in Tehran on July 31.
