Regarding the investigation carried out by the Superintendency of Higher Education, Hugo Lavados was “calm” and ruled out that public resources have been allocated to tasks that are not related to the academic field.
Hugo Lavados, rector of the San Sebastián University (USS)spoke out after the controversy generated by the $17 million salary that Marcela Cubillos received for taking classes at the school, ensuring that the large remuneration of the now candidate for mayor of Las Condes was “a sin of omission.”
In an interview with La Tercera, Lavados acknowledged that he was not aware of Marcela Cubillos’ millionaire salary, pointing out that “It is a sin of omission on my part, clearly. “I did not review the total remuneration, among other things, because the university has 6,000 academics.”
Along these lines, he expressed that this situation “hurts many sensitivities and that is why we have pointed out two things: it is an exceptionality, and there are clear procedures in this regard,” pointing out that “given that this is a regulated institution that fulfills public functions, that generates goods public, I think he has to be extremely responsible for what he does and give an account.”
Despite this, Hugo Lavados defended the work carried out by Marcela Cubillos as an academic at the San Sebastián University, stating that “she fully fulfilled her contract, one full-time, he continued doing classes and sending material as he had planned during the period he was in Madrid, he did distance classes, with lapses.”
Along with this, he added that the former Minister of Education He also had other tasks such as “dissemination, extension and writing proposals regarding important problems in the country.”
However, the rector of the USS assured that he understands the criticism of this fact and that from this “it has also allowed us to reinforce the procedures, and a committee is already functioning to analyze those cases that could be considered exceptional. It is perfectly understood and that is why we have been working hard to respond to those organizations that are qualified to ask us questions.”
