Living beings are only a small part of a much larger and unknown whole, in which there are things that we believe are foreign and instead touch us, indeed they reach our homes. A world that raises questions. Restlessness dwells in the western landscape of Alessandro Baricco’s new novel, Abel, which will be in bookstores on November 7 for Feltrinelli (8 years after the previous novel, The Young Bride, 2018) in which gunslingers, natives, prophets behind bars, a mysterious people of fishermen, the Nootkas, and other characters move in a wild place, a metaphysical West.
Three chapters of Baricco’s novel can be read in preview in the new issue of «la Lettura», #614, previewed on the App on Saturday 2 September and on Sunday 3 on the newsstand, in a special four-page insert in the center of the newspaper. With the anticipation of Baricco’s book, the insert offers another author’s preview: three works by the great master of erasures, Emilio Isgrò, which will be part of the Syllogismo del Cavallo exhibition at Palazzo dei Pio di Carpi (Modena) from 15 September to 10 December, as part of the Festivalfilosofia (15-17 September in Carpi, Modena, Sassuolo). In addition to the Syllogism of the horse, the pages host the works Anima rationalis and Omnis vita, philosophical images that tell, with the erasure, a reality both overwritten and removed from our sight.

Another focus on «La Lettura» is the 15-page special that opens the issue and is dedicated to the Mantua Festivaletteratura (from Wednesday 6 to Sunday 10) with interviews and reviews, accompanied by drawings by Fausto Gilberti, who in Mantua (on 6 ) inaugurates his exhibition A bit of art history for Corraini’s 50th birthday. To begin with, three interviews on the relationship between humans and nature. The poet Chandra Candiani, who will be at the festival on Friday 8 with her book Pane del bosco 2020-2023 (Einaudi), in an interview with Marco Ventura talks about how important the bond with trees and animals is: she lives in a house in the woods, and the word of writing, he says, is born of silence.
The reality narrated by the Mexican Guadalupe Nettel (in Mantua on the 9th and 10th) in her stories, Life elsewhere (The new frontier), interviewed by Cristina Taglietti, is a completely different reality: some stories reflect the anguish of the pandemic and imagine a perennial lockdown . The Mantua festival will be opened by Giacomo Poretti on the 6th: the actor and author illustrates to Matteo Trevisani the themes of his Un allegro disconcert (The ship of Theseus +), amazement in the face of death, spirituality, the sense of « After”. From 6 September the novel-world I libri di Jakub (Bompiani) by the Polish Olga Tokarczuk, Nobel in 2018, will be in bookstores, which will close the Mantuan review on 10 September: over 1,100 pages, a journey «through seven frontiers, five languages and three great religions», in Central Europe of the eighteenth century: writes Vanni Santoni. The path through the many events in Mantua goes through the special with numerous other interventions and articles.
The new issue stops outside Italy, in San Francisco, where it meets the authors Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida, husband and wife, creators of editorial initiatives such as McSweeney’s and social initiatives such as “826 Valencia”, for disadvantaged students: of this reality which offers after-school activities, culture and a safe space for children, the two authors speak when interviewed by Enrico Rotelli, during an evening in California. On Saturday 2, in the Theme of the Day of the «La Lettura» App, Rotelli himself proposes an insight into the panorama of California writers.
Another great American author, Stephen King, will be in bookstores from September 5 with Holly (Sperling & Kupfer): Antonella Lattanzi reflects on the new novel, which tells of a missing girl and explores the presence of evil in everyday life. In the issue, also the pages on the murder of Willy Monteiro Duarte, mentioned in the book by Christian Raimo and Alessandro Coltré (Rizzoli) and in a documentary by Aurelio Picca, with articles by Roberto Ferrucci and Alessandro Beretta. And a focus on the massacre in Piazza della Loggia in Brescia in 1974, on the eve of the new trial which begins on 7 September; Alessandra Coppola and Mara Rodella write about it.
