Webb Telescope Reveals Rare Triple Star System, ‘Apep,’ Unlocking Cosmic Secrets
A groundbreaking new image from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has revealed a remarkably rare triple star system, dubbed Apep after the Egyptian god of chaos, showcasing interlocking spirals and offering unprecedented insights into stellar evolution.
The JWST, renowned for its ability to revolutionize our understanding of the universe through its precise infrared instruments, continues to deliver stunning visuals and critical data. Its recent observations have already captured spectacular galactic formations and even unveiled a nebula resembling a Halloween costume. This latest discovery, however, stands out for its unique complexity and rarity.
Unveiling the Secrets of Apep
Initially discovered in 2018 using the Very Large Telescope (VLT), Apep presented a mystery to astronomers. Only the brightest, innermost spiral was visible at the time, but scientists suspected the presence of additional structures. It was the JWST that finally confirmed these suspicions, revealing nested spirals within each other, as reported by Space.com.
The system is particularly fascinating due to the presence of two Wolf-Rayet stars – an exceptionally rare type, comprising only approximately 1,000 stars out of the Milky Way’s more than 100 billion. These stars are massive and unstable, and their interactions are key to the system’s unique appearance.
A Unique Orbital Dance
What truly sets Apep apart is the orbital period of its two Wolf-Rayet stars. At 190 years, it is significantly longer than the typical two to ten-year orbit seen in most similar systems. This extended orbital period dictates the formation of the observed spirals. Each time these massive stars approach one another, their stellar winds – flows of particles – collide, creating the swirling patterns captured by the JWST.
“The data from the JWST, combined with eight years of observations from the VLT, allowed for a refinement of the calculations surrounding these stars,” explained a researcher involved in the project.
The Hidden Supergiant
Perhaps the most significant revelation from the JWST’s observations was the detection of a third star within the system: a supergiant with a mass 40 to 50 times that of our Sun, compared to the 10 to 20 solar masses of the Wolf-Rayet stars. This detection was made possible by the cavities created in the expanding spirals, a result of the supergiant’s influence on the stellar winds and dust from the Wolf-Rayet stars.
A Future of Cosmic Explosions
The fate of all three stars within the Apep system appears to be a dramatic one. Astronomers predict that each star will eventually end its life in a spectacular supernova explosion. The supergiant is likely to collapse into a neutron star, while the two Wolf-Rayet stars are predicted to produce gamma-ray bursts – among the most energetic events in the universe – ultimately leaving behind stellar black holes.
This discovery provides a unique opportunity to study the lifecycle of massive stars and the processes that lead to some of the most extreme phenomena in the cosmos. The JWST’s continued observations promise to unlock even more secrets of this fascinating and chaotic triple star system.
