Continuous rain in Madurai due to last rainy day A kilo of jasmine flower sold for Rs 4,000 yesterday.

Due to continuous rains in Madurai and surrounding districts, water is stagnant in the fields. This has affected the cultivation of other flowers including jasmine. Due to this, the supply of flowers to the Madurai cow scarf flower market has decreased.

The last auspicious day of the month of Karthika is the Sabarimala season The demand for flowers has increased. Jasmine flower, which was selling at Rs 2,500 till yesterday, increased by Rs 1,500 to Rs 4,000 in a single day yesterday.

The general public was alarmed as the price of jasmine flowers and other flowers went up.

AV Manokaran, Secretary, Cattle Flower Commission Merchants’ Association said:

Yield has been affected by continuous rains. On normal days at least 5 tons of jasmine flowers will come. Currently only a ton has arrived. Thus a kilo of jasmine sold for Rs. 4,000.
