“They have to meet the same standards. That is to say that We are not going to make it easy”said Biden when asked by journalists about whether the Atlantic alliance would facilitate the Ukrainian entry.

Although Western countries openly support Ukraine joining NATO in the future, its immediate membership raises suspicions because the war in Ukraine would become a de facto direct conflict between Russia and the Alliance.

At the same time, the head of the White House described as “totally irresponsible” the deployment of the first Russian nuclear warheads in Belarusannounced by Vladimir Putin himself this Friday.

That move from Moscow was fruit of an agreement announced in March between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko, who ceded his country’s territory to Russia to attack Ukraine.

The Kremlin chief reiterated that the weapons may only be used by Russia if there is a threat to the territorial integrity, independence, sovereignty and existence of the Russian state.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called the deployment a “provocation” on Friday but ruled out a nuclear response from Washington.

Summit in Lithuania

Biden’s comments come ahead of the next annual NATO summit, which will take place on July 11-12 in Vilnius, Lithuania.

In that meeting, Ukraine will not be invited to join NATO, announced Friday its secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, although he noted that kyiv could be a member “at any given time.”

The invitation is the first step in the membership process.

In any case, the Alliance intends to hold the first meeting of the new NATO-Ukraine council with Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky during the summit.

“God save the Queen”

After his statements about Ukraine, Biden surprised locals and strangers by closing his speech at an event in Connecticut (northeast) with the phrase “God save the queen”, which again provoked Questions about your mental health.

Biden was participating in an act in favor of restrictions on the possession and use of weapons when he uttered this sentence, which is even more striking because since the death of Elizabeth II in September, it is his son, Carlos, who acts as King of England .

A White House spokeswoman, Olivia Dalton, qualified after the act that the president was “discussing something with a person from the public,” according to the Europa Press news agency.

In May 2022, a total of 61 Republican congressmen urged Biden to undergo a test to check his “current cognitive state and capacity” after several similar public slips.

“We believe that regardless of gender, age or political party, all presidents should document and demonstrate good mental abilities,” argued the petition, led by Republican Congressman Ronny Jackson, who was a White House physician during the terms. of Barack Obama and Donald Trump.
