Azhar Riyati, a Jordanian woman who has six daughters and sons, says that when she joined UN Women’s Oasis Center program, she “feared that she would not be able to do a good job” while attending to all her family commitments.

But luckily, he discovered that “interacting with the staff and with participants of different ages and backgrounds helped me enjoy the experience, overcome my fears, become familiar with the equipment, and be more flexible in my dealings with other people.”

Riyati, who had never worked outside the home, now teaches classes at one of the program centers. Additionally, what she learned about dressmaking during the project has helped her gain a source of income and improve her self-confidence.

Since their creation in 2012, Oasis Centers have served more than 30,000 participants, primarily Syrian refugees and vulnerable Jordanian women and their families. The program operates 18 centers in Jordan in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Development, and four additional facilities in the Za’atari and Azraq refugee camps.

“Oasis Centers offer a safe space where women talk about their concerns and learn positive management strategies,” explains Hadeel Qunaibi, protection officer at Oasis. “It is much more than organizing workshops; “It is about integration into the community, about creating a feeling of empowered women with the ability to face responsibilities.”

The Oasis program is supported by the European Union Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian Crisis, also known as the Madad Fund, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Governments of Canada, Finland, France, Iceland and Italy. The goal of the centers throughout Jordan is to empower women and promote community cohesion through a space where Syrian refugees and Jordanian women can meet each other and learn valuable new skills.
