Interview with Judge Faiq Zaidan: Upholding the Rule of Law in Iraq
Editor, Time.news: Today, we’re joined by Judge Faiq Zaidan, the head of Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council, to discuss the recent initiatives aimed at enhancing judicial procedures against drug crimes and deviant movements. Judge Zaidan, thank you for taking the time to speak with us.
Judge Faiq Zaidan: Thank you for having me. It’s imperative that we discuss these crucial issues facing our society today.
Editor: Your recent visit to the Karbala Court of Appeal highlights the judiciary’s role in strengthening the rule of law. Can you elaborate on the discussions held during that visit?
Judge Zaidan: Certainly. In our meeting with judges and members of the public prosecution in Karbala, we underscored the pressing need to tighten judicial procedures against drug crimes and immoral offenses. There is a significant concern regarding deviant movements manipulating religious narratives to justify illegal actions. It’s our duty to ensure that the law is upheld and that those exploiting religion for criminal purposes are held accountable.
Editor: The battle against drug-related crimes is a critical issue worldwide. What specific measures are you planning to implement to combat this growing problem in Iraq?
Judge Zaidan: We are implementing a multi-faceted approach that encompasses stringent laws and increased collaboration among law enforcement agencies. Additionally, enhancing training for judges and prosecutors on handling drug-related cases is essential. This will ensure that we not only prosecute offenders effectively but also understand the underlying issues contributing to drug abuse.
Editor: The intersection of law and religion is complex. How do you plan to address movements that misuse religion for unlawful activities while respecting freedom of belief?
Judge Zaidan: It is indeed a delicate balance. Our focus is on distinguishing between genuine religious practices and those that corrupt religious teachings for personal gain. Our judicial procedures will strive to protect individuals’ rights while also making it clear that any form of deviance that contravenes the law will not be tolerated.
Editor: What implications do you foresee if these initiatives are successful in the context of Iraq’s social fabric?
Judge Zaidan: A successful implementation will lead to a stronger, law-abiding society where citizens feel safe and valued. It will restore public trust in the legal system and deter potential criminals from exploiting societal vulnerabilities. Ultimately, this could foster community development and a sense of unity against criminal elements.
Editor: For our readers who may be concerned about the issue of drug crimes in their communities, what practical advice can you offer?
Judge Zaidan: I advise community members to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activities to local authorities. Additionally, engaging in constructive dialogues within communities about the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of legal processes can greatly enhance public awareness. Education plays a key role in prevention.
Editor: Thank you, Judge Zaidan, for your insightful perspectives and the work you and your team are doing to strengthen the rule of law in Iraq.
Judge Zaidan: Thank you for the opportunity to discuss these important issues. Together, we can work towards a safer future for all citizens.
