Good start into the new era!

Tennis star Jule Niemeier (24) started the ITF tournament in Tokyo with a win. The Dortmund player, seeded number 2, easily beat the Japanese Moyuka Uchijima (22) 6: 2, 6: 4. It was the first game under their new coach Zeljko Krajan (44).

Niemeier failed at the US Open in the first round of qualifying and then parted ways with her coach Christopher Kas (43), with whom she had worked since April 2022.

The reason was the ongoing playful crisis combined with the lack of results. That year, Niemeier was knocked out twelve times in the first round, five times in the second and twice failed to qualify. In 2022 she was still in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon.

After a few days at home, after Krajan’s commitment, she decided to undertake an Asian tour. After Tokyo we go to Osaka and then to Guangzhou (China).

Goal: to cushion the impending crash in the world rankings so as not to have to qualify at the Australian Open in Melbourne like in New York. If she wins the tournament in Tokyo, she would be close to the top 100. Only with the US Open debacle in her luggage would she be in 138th place from Monday.

In the round of 16 in Tokyo, Niemeier, who only needed 75 minutes to win her first round, will meet Indian Ankita Raina (30/No. 189) or Russia’s Sofya Lansere (22/No. 321). Japan’s Nao Hibino (28), number 81 in the world, is number 1 in Tokyo. At the earliest, she would wait for Niemeier, who is officially still number 91, in the final.

It is currently unclear what will happen after returning from Asia. She flies to China without her Croatian coach. She will only see him again after Osaka in Germany, where she wants to continue training in Regensburg in the academy of her manager Michael Geserer (53).
