In the best case scenario, fluoride varnish can protect teeth from tooth decay. What is new is that all children under the age of six are now entitled to this in the dental practice.

It is intended to protect milk teeth from tooth decay: Fluoride varnish for hardening tooth enamel is now covered by health insurance for all children under the age of six. You are entitled to have your dentist treat your teeth with it twice every calendar six months.

The Joint Federal Committee of Doctors, Health Insurance Companies and Clinics (G-BA) decided on this innovation in January of this year. With its appearance in the Federal Gazette, it has now come into force on April 24th.

This regulation previously applied

Until now, the question of when the health insurance company would pay for the application of fluoride varnish was linked to the risk of tooth decay. Fluoride varnish was only covered by health insurance if children between the ages of 34 months and the age of six were at high risk of tooth decay. Younger children – up to the age of 33 months – were previously entitled to this regardless of the risk of tooth decay.
