Private rooms have given a new lease of life to karaoke, which arrived in France in the early 1990s. Albin Durand

INVESTIGATION – Whether they offer to sing very loudly in small groups, to recognize your favorite songs in a few seconds or to dance on the tables after the meal, these establishments which turn up the volume are on the rise.

“Give me your heart, baby, your body, baby!”a group of thirty-somethings shout into the microphone, their eyes glued to the screen on which the lyrics of the flagship hit of the 2000s scroll «Femme like U» by K. Maro. There is no shame or embarrassment to be had here for these friends, locked in a padded room, out of sight. When they come out, the vocals are slightly scratchy. “It looks like an evening in an apartment, the atmosphere is cozy”appreciates Liz, who is the first to come to this BAM Karaoké Box establishment. “And then it’s festive, we’re sharing”adds his friend Damien, a little more used to it, with a smile.

Far from the cheesy image that has stuck to it for a long time, karaoke has had a makeover in recent years. The concept of private rooms, imported from Japan and of which BAM Karaoké Box is one of the pioneers in France, is no stranger to this. Since then, these places of singing leisure have brought in their wake a whole range of new musical activities
