Chepngetich finished after two hours, nine minutes and 56 seconds, breaking the record by almost two minutes. The previous world record was achieved by the Ethiopian Tifista Assef at the Berlin Marathon last year, who finished in two hours, 11 minutes and 53 seconds.
Also, the Kenyan became the first woman to finish the marathon faster than two hours and ten minutes, as well as the first three-time winner of the Chicago Marathon in the women’s competition.
Ethiopian Sutume Asafa Kebede took second place, losing almost eight minutes, while Kenyan athlete Irine Cheptai completes the top three.
Korirs was the first to reach the finish line in the men’s competition. The Kenyan finished in two hours two minutes and 44 seconds.
He beat Ethiopia’s Huseidin Essa by one minute and 55 seconds, while Kenya’s Amos Kipruto was a further 11 seconds behind.
This season, only the New York marathon, scheduled for November 3, remains in the “World Marathon Majors” series.
