Kerry Washington has revealed she contemplated suicide during the height of her eating disorder battle during her college years. The actress, now 46, detailed going into a cycle of ‘binge eating and endless exercise’ as she struggled to maintain a ‘perfect’ image in an emotional interview with Robin Roberts for a 20/20 special airing Sunday.

In the interview, Washington opens up about her struggle with an eating disorder, describing her life as a “toxic cycle of self-abuse.” She explains how her disorder utilized tools such as starvation, binge eating, body obsession, and compulsive exercise. Washington admits that she felt the abuse was a way to hurt herself and escape from the pain.

When asked if she had considered suicide, Washington responds affirmatively, stating that the behaviors she engaged in were acts of trying to destroy herself. However, she shares that the first time she sought help was when she realized she couldn’t continue on her own. Prayer and asking for help with her eating disorder were her first steps towards recovery.

Washington reflects on her ability to perform “perfect” in all aspects of her life except when it came to food. She admits to using food as a way to cope and escape control, leading to body dysmorphia and hatred. However, she assures that she has moved past the worst of her disorder and has a healthier relationship with food now. She acknowledges that occasional slip-ups remind her to check herself and make conscious choices.

The Scandal star emphasizes the importance of therapy in her recovery journey. Through therapy, she learned to love herself and express her feelings instead of suppressing them with food. Washington encourages others struggling with eating disorders to seek help and communicate their emotions.

Outside of her personal battles, Washington has enjoyed a successful acting career, starring in films like Django Unchained and the TV series Scandal. She has also been actively involved in activism and was recognized as one of Time Women Of The Year in 2022.
