King Charles III of the United Kingdom will not interfere if one day Australians decide to renounce the monarchy, as he declared in an exchange of letters with the republican movement of that country, where he will go next week with his wife Camila. the “Daily Mail” reported it this Saturday.
The monarch’s personal secretary, Nathan Ross, said he felt “deep love and affection” for Australia, before explaining his position regarding her figure, which was already known but becomes relevant on the eve of the official visit.
Responding last March to a letter from the Australian Republican Movement (ARM) requesting a meeting with the sovereign – which was refused – Ross thanked them for taking the trouble to write.
“We assure you that your views on this matter have been carefully considered,” he said on behalf of the British head of state.
“Her Majesty, as a constitutional monarch, acts on the advice of her ministers and therefore the decision whether Australia will become a republic is a matter for the citizens of Australia,” he added.
In its letter to Buckingham Palace, the ARM praised the Royal Family’s “significant contribution” and argued that many Australians would continue to “respect the British Monarchy” if they disengaged and would want the two countries to remain “close friends and allies”. .
The last referendum in Australia, which is a member of the Commonwealth, was held in 1999 and almost 55% voted to remain under Britain’s constitutional monarchy, which 14 countries around the world still maintain, although many are considering independence.
A few days ago, the same newspaper published that Charles III will suspend his cancer treatment during the visit from 18 to 26 October in which, in addition to Australia, he will travel to Samoa, where he will participate in the meeting of the leaders of the Commonwealth.
