Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said today that President Klaus Iohannis has a chance to become the Secretary General of NATO, and Romania deserves to be represented at a similar level, Agerpress reported.

Çolaku was asked after a meeting of the National Political Council of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) what chance Klaus Iohannis has of getting the NATO leadership post.

“Romania has a chance. Romania deserves to be represented at both the EU and NATO levels. Mr. President has a chance,” Colacu told journalists at the Parliament Palace.

Earlier, the prime minister and leader of the Social Democrats said, commenting on Iohannis’ candidacy for NATO Secretary General, that a possible success “would mean something very important, a Romanian at the head of one of the largest structures in the world.”

On March 12, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced that he would run for the post of NATO Secretary General.

“I undertake this candidacy on behalf of Romania with full responsibility and this decision is based on Romania’s results, on the experience gained during my two terms as President of Romania, on my deep understanding of the challenges facing NATO , Europe and especially our region, and of my firm commitment to the core values ​​and goals of NATO,” the head of state said in a statement to the media.

In the race for the top post in the North Atlantic Alliance, the Romanian president faces Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, whose candidacy has already received the support of the United States, Great Britain, France, Germany and others. However, Hungary has said it will not support Rutte for the post.

The candidate for secretary general of the alliance must be unanimously supported by all 32 NATO member countries, and the decision is expected to become clear in the fall, writes BTA.
