FLORENCE – Everyone who played football in the 1958 World Cup remembers Sweden’s legendary player Kurt Hammer as he disappeared into the jungle. Hammer was 89 years old. Hamrin was a player for Fiorentina in Italy. It was on Hammer’s strength that Sweden reached the finals of that World Cup and struggled against Pele and Garincha’s Brazil. It was Brazil’s first World Cup title. They beat Sweden 5-2 in the final.
Scored 17 goals in 32 matches for Sweden. He scored against Germany in the 1958 World Cup semi-final. Mario Zagalo, who played for Brazil, died at the age of 92 at the end of last year.
