Latvia Issues Yellow Alert for Heavy Snowfall in Kurzeme Region

A yellow weather alert, indicating potential danger, has been issued for a significant portion of the Kurzeme region in Latvia, effective Sunday, January 11th, according to the Latvian Environment, Gelology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC). Residents and travelers should prepare for hazardous conditions as a substantial snowfall event unfolds.

Snowfall Forecast and Impacted Areas

The heaviest snowfall is anticipated to concentrate along a corridor extending from Cape Kolka and progressing inland along the Gulf of Rīga. While the western coastline, including the cities of Ventspils and Liepāja, is expected to avoid the most intense precipitation, other areas of the country are also forecast to receive accumulating snow. Authorities are urging caution, particularly for drivers, and advising individuals to assess the necessity of their travel plans.

Nationwide Conditions and Travel Advisories

Across Latvia on Sunday, conditions will be predominantly cloudy with continued snowfall. The snow cover is expected to increase by 2 to 4 centimeters in most areas, with accumulations reaching 5 to 7 centimeters in western regions. Reduced visibility and slippery roads are anticipated, posing significant challenges for transportation.

A north to northeasterly wind, ranging from slow to moderate, will prevail. Along the Kurzeme coast, wind gusts could reach up to 15 meters per second. Temperatures will range between -4 Celsius and -9 Celsius, with slightly milder conditions expected along the Kurzeme coast.

Conditions in Rīga

The capital city, Rīga, will also experience mostly cloudy skies and occasional snow on Sunday. A slow to moderate northerly wind is forecast, and the maximum air temperature will be between -5 C and -7 C.

Drivers are strongly encouraged to exercise extreme caution and consider postponing non-essential travel. The combination of snowfall, reduced visibility, and slippery road conditions creates a heightened risk of accidents.
