On the 31st, the ruling and opposition parties agreed to form a joint task force at the National Assembly level to support the resolution of the Jeju Air disaster at Muan Airport in Jeollanam-do. It was also decided to form a government consultative body to discuss issues related to people’s livelihood.

National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-sik, People Power Party Emergency Response Committee Chairman Kwon Young-se, and Democratic Party Leader Lee Jae-myung reached this agreement during a meeting at the National Assembly this afternoon, according to People Power Party chief spokesperson Shin Dong-wook and Democratic Party chief spokesperson Cho Seung-rae.

The ruling and opposition parties agreed that the National Assembly should provide more systematic and integrated support to the victims’ families and decided to jointly form a disaster response committee. The disaster response committee is run by three co-chairs: Kim Min-ki, Secretary General of the National Assembly, Kwon Young-jin, chairman of the People Power Party’s Jeju Air Disaster Resolution Task Force (TF), and Joo Cheol-hyun, chairman of the Democratic Party’s disaster response committee. It was also decided to form a working-level consultation with one person from each party, including non-negotiating organizations.

The ruling and opposition parties decided to discuss with the government after the National Assembly reviewed measures, including exemption of those responsible, necessary to expedite the process as quickly as possible, reflecting the opinions of the bereaved families that identification, autopsy, and postmortem work were slow.

On this day, the ruling and opposition parties decided to launch the ‘National Assembly-Government Consultative Body’ (National Assembly-Government Consultative Body), a consultative body between the National Assembly and the government that deals with people’s livelihood issues. Chief Spokesperson Shin explained, “We agreed to quickly stabilize the national situation across all aspects of diplomacy, security, trade, and the people’s livelihood and economy.”

The agenda is organized after first conducting working-level consultations involving the policy committee chair and chief of staff of each party, the chief of staff and senior secretary for political affairs in the chairman’s office, and the head of the Office for Government Policy Coordination on behalf of the government. Afterwards, the National Affairs Council, in which the Speaker of the National Assembly and representatives of each party participate, will be launched. Senior Spokesperson Cho said, “There was also talk about a supplementary budget today,” and “we discussed reviewing these things within a larger framework.”

The meeting on this day was presided over by Chairman Woo and was held in the form of a meeting with Chairman Kwon, who was appointed the day before. The three people spoke in unison about the need for cooperation to resolve the Muan Jeju Air disaster and the restoration of a consultative body between the ruling and opposition parties.

Regarding the Jeju Air disaster in Muan, Chairman Woo said, “We will work together to ensure that in the eyes of the bereaved families and the public, the National Assembly and the nation do not fall short in what they should do.”

He continued, “It is time for the National Assembly and the government to join forces on a bipartisan basis through the National Affairs Council for the sake of the economy, people’s livelihood, diplomacy, trade, and security.” “I will do my best to make it happen,” he said.

Emergency Committee Chairman Kwon emphasized, “There cannot be separate parties when it comes to protecting the lives of the people,” and added, “As the ruling party, even though we are a minority party, we will take the lead and do our best in creating measures at the National Assembly level.” At the same time, he emphasized, “It is time for the National Assembly, which is the center of politics, to do its original work,” and added, “Restoration of politics is absolutely necessary, and the prompt start of a consultative body between the ruling and opposition parties and the government is necessary as the first step in restoring politics.” .

Representative Lee said, “I hope that we will discover, support, and take action as much as possible at the National Assembly level, and discuss it with Emergency Committee Chairman Kwon.” He continued, “At times like these, we need to restore politics within the National Assembly and do our best to do what we can to stabilize national affairs.”
