Last year, performance ticket sales exceeded movie ticket sales for two consecutive years.
According to the Performing Arts Integrated Network (KOPIS) on the 3rd, last year’s ticket sales for musicals and popular music were provisionally estimated at 1.4537 trillion won. This is a 14.5% increase from the previous year. It is more than the sales of movies (1.1945 trillion won). Among the top 10 performances based on total ticket sales, seven were all musicals except for Coldplay’s performance in Korea (1st place) and singer Lim Young-woong’s concert (7th and 8th places). Last year, musical ticket sales amounted to 465 billion won, a 1.3% increase from the previous year (459.1 billion won).
The growth of the musical market was driven by proven hits. Last year, the number one musical ticket reservation was the New York Broadway musical ‘Aladdin’. This musical, based on Disney’s animation of the same name, debuted in Korea in November last year. Star musical actors Kim Jun-su, Jeong Seong-hwa, and Min Kyung-ah appeared and attracted attention. The Seoul performance will continue until June next year, and most of the seats have been sold until early March, when reservations are currently available.
Long-selling musicals with a fan base followed. There were many works that were re-performed for more than 10 years, such as ‘Frankenstein’ (2nd place), which premiered in 2014, the long-selling ‘Chicago’ (3rd place), which premiered in 2000, and ‘Kinky Boots’ (4th place), which premiered in 2014. Among the top 10 musicals with advance sales, the only one that ranked as an original musical and a new work was ‘The Rose of Versailles’. There were seven licensed works imported from foreign works and performed domestically.
