Latvia bolsters Ukraine’s Energy Resilience with Vehicle and Equipment Donations

Latvia is significantly expanding its support for ukraine’s embattled energy infrastructure, with recent donations of vehicles and critical equipment exceeding €100,000 in value. This ongoing assistance aims to counter the deliberate targeting of Ukraine’s power systems by Russian forces and reinforce the nation’s independence.

Sustained Support amidst Ongoing Conflict

The latest contribution, spearheaded by Latvian minister for Climate and Energy Kaspars Melnis and Ilze Znotiņa, a member of the management board of Latvia’s electricity transmission system operator AS “Augstsprieguma tīkls†(AST), involved the delivery of a fleet of vehicles to Ukraine via the volunteer organization “Twitter Convoy.†AST donated a total of 21 vehicles at the close of the year, bringing the total number of vehicles donated by Latvian society and companies, and delivered by Twitter Convoy, to 3,402 units.

“Ukraine’s power system is one of the main targets of the aggressor,as it directly affects the daily lives of millions of people,†stated Minister Melnis. “If we are able to help mitigate the damage caused by the aggressor, we must do so, as innocent people continue to suffer every day from the consequences of this inhumane invasion. Ukrainians are heroically resisting overwhelming force, and we must continue to support them, as Ukraine is fighting for universal values that are also important to us.â€

Reader question — Why is Ukraine’s power grid a key target? Russia aims to disrupt essential services and demoralize the population during the conflict.

AST’s Complete Assistance Program

AST has been actively providing support to Ukraine’s energy system since the start of Russia’s invasion.Beyond vehicles, the company has supplied essential equipment and materials to aid in the restoration of damaged infrastructure. according to a company release, AST’s commitment extends to providing assistance until Ukraine achieves victory.

“Since Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, AST has been providing support for the restoration of Ukraine’s energy system,†emphasized Rolands Irklis, Chairman of the Management Board of AST. “Alongside equipment and materials, we also donate vehicles to assist in eliminating the consequences of destruction. Attacks by the aggressor continue, particularly against the energy system, therefore we will continue to support Ukraine and encourage everyone to provide assistance until Ukraine’s victory.â€

Beyond Infrastructure: Supporting Ukrainian Communities

The recent delivery coordinated by the “twitter Convoy†included not only vehicles from AST but also gifts prepared by employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These gifts were intended for children in the Chernihiv region who are receiving social and psychological rehabilitation in Nizhyn, Khmilnyk, and Chernihiv.

Diverse Vehicle Fleet and Specialized Equipment

AST’s vehicle donations this year encompassed a range of transport options, including four-wheel-drive passenger vehicles and groundworks machinery. In early 2024, the company initially donated 22 vehicles, comprising truck-mounted lifts, passenger cars, trailers, off-road quad bikes, and othre specialized transport units. This initial donation was further supplemented with an additional seven vehicles later in the year.

In autumn 2023, AST dispatched a substantial shipment of high-voltage transmission equipment to bolster Ukraine’s energy system. This shipment included critical components such as 330 kV transformers, 110 kV circuit breakers, 110 kV disconnectors, 110 kV surge arresters, and over 50 tonnes of transformer oil, totaling 66 tonnes in weight. Prior to this, AST had also delivered a shipment of insulators and minibuses to Ukraine.
