A beloved online personality who captivated millions with her joyful approach to gaming has passed away. Epic Gamer Grandma, whose real name was Agnes, died peacefully on Monday at the age of 78, leaving behind a vibrant digital legacy and a community of devoted fans.
Agnes’s grandson, Culsan, shared the news with her more than 850,000 Instagram followers on Tuesday, describing a heartbreaking but peaceful passing. “We watched the strongest woman we know slowly lose her words, and now that she’s gone, we are drowning in all the things we never got the chance to say back,” he wrote.
A late-Blooming Digital Star
The streamer amassed a remarkable following on social media, garnering over 2.4 million followers on TikTok and 117,000 subscribers on YouTube. Her popularity stemmed from her genuine enthusiasm for games like “Skyrim,” “Minecraft,” and “Phasmophobia,” proving that age is no barrier to embracing new hobbies and connecting with others online.
“Grandma showed that the internet doesn’t only belong to the young,” Culsan wrote in his tribute. “She showed that you can be in your seventies and still find new communities, new friendships, new ways to express yourself.” He emphasized her impact on challenging ageism, stating, “She reminded people that our elders are not invisible, that they have stories, humor, opinions, and so much love left to give.”
Battling Illness with Grace
Culsan began sharing updates about his grandmother’s declining health with her followers in October, explaining her absence from recent videos. On October 16, he revealed that Agnes’s chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) had considerably worsened, requiring hospitalization. Two days later, he confirmed she had suffered a major stroke and would need extensive medical care.
The family continued to provide updates throughout November, detailing the severity of her condition. On November 6, Culsan shared a especially poignant update, describing how Agnes’s ability to communicate had been severely impaired. “Her mind and speech remain seriously impaired.Most sentences are either entirely illegible or simply don’t make sense,” he wrote, adding that witnessing her pain was “absolutely heartbreaking.”
