Latvia Reports First Influenza Cases as COVID-19 Remains Present

The first cases of influenza have been recorded in Latvia this season, according to the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC),which reported the findings on October 9th. While influenza numbers are currently lower than the same period last year, health officials are closely monitoring both influenza and ongoing COVID-19 activity.

Initial Influenza cases and Trends

Seven patients have been clinically diagnosed with influenza in outpatient facilities participating in influenza surveillance. This translates to a rate of 9.9 cases per 100,000 population – a decrease from the 15.6 cases per 100,000 reported during the same timeframe last season. The majority of these initial cases have been identified in RÄ«ga, latvia’s capital city, with single cases also reported in Jelgava and Daugavpils.

Despite the emergence of influenza, the SPKC has indicated that the overall prevalence of acute respiratory infections across Latvia remains low.

Did you know?-Influenza viruses are constantly changing, which is why a new vaccine is developed each year to match circulating strains. The SPKC recommends annual vaccination for optimal protection.

COVID-19 Activity Continues

Alongside the seasonal return of influenza, Latvia continues to monitor COVID-19 trends.Data from week 40 shows a slight increase in the proportion of laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 samples, rising from 8.9% in week 39 to 11.4%.However, the peak rate of confirmed cases since the recent surge occurred in week 37, reaching 18.9%.

Currently, 75 patients are being treated for COVID-19 in latvian hospitals, following the hospitalization of 36 new patients. Tragically,10 deaths have been recorded among individuals with confirmed COVID-19 infections.

Pro tip:-To prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses, practice good hygiene. Frequent handwashing with soap and water, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when sick are crucial steps.

Vaccination encouraged

in light of both influenza and COVID-19 circulation, the SPKC is actively encouraging residents to consult with their general practitioners (GPs) regarding available vaccination options. Proactive immunization remains a key strategy in mitigating the spread and severity of both viruses.
