Senior leaders of Awami League, BNP and Jatiya Party attended the Iftar program organized by Democracy International courtesy of politicians.

This iftar held on Thursday (March 14) at a hotel in the capital turned into a meeting of political harmony with the participation of more than half a hundred leaders of the three parties.

International organization Democracy International has been working for more than a decade to develop women and youth leadership within the country’s three main political parties and to increase mutual cooperation and solidarity among the parties.

The “Political Harmony Iftar” has been regularly organized for the last three years under the “Strengthening Political Landscape (SPL)” project with the support of USAID.

BNP Standing Committee and several presidium members of Awami League participated in this iftar courtesy of politicians. Apart from this, Awami League’s organizing secretary Ahmed Hossain, Sujit Roy Nandi, international affairs secretary Shammi Ahmed, Jatiya Party presidium member Sherifa Quader and others were present.

In a brief speech welcoming everyone, SPL Project Chief of Party Dana L. Olds said, parties may have different ideologies, political tolerance does not mean going for policies outside of your party’s ideology.

He also said that in a democracy, we should practice honesty among ourselves to protect the right to express different views and respect for others.

Pointing out that Democracy International is working with the three main parties to increase political harmony in Bangladesh, Dana L. Olds said, highlighting the spirit of mutual coexistence and respect is one of the greatness of Mahe Ramadan.

BNP standing committee member Dr. Abdul Moin Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan and Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury participated.

USAID’s Democracy, Human Rights and Governance Director Alena Tanse also participated in the Iftar event.
