The International Prize for Arabic Fiction announced the shortlisted novels for the “Arab Booker Prize” in its 2024 session.

The International Prize for Arabic Fiction said in a statement that the nominated novels included six works, including two novels by Palestinian authors, where the winner will receive $50,000, while each shortlisted nominee will receive ten thousand dollars.

She pointed out that out of 16 novels that reached the long list, the jury chose for the short list the novels “A Mask in the Color of the Sky” by the Palestinian Bassem Khandakji, “A Gamble in Honor of Lady Mitsi” by the Egyptian Ahmed Al-Morsi, “The Mosaic” by the Moroccan Issa Nasseri, and “Khatem Salimi.” ) by Syria’s Rima Bali, (Bahbalamka) by Saudi Arabia’s Raja Alam, and (The Seventh Sky of Jerusalem) by Palestinian Osama Al-Issa.

The long list was selected by a jury headed by the Syrian writer Nabil Suleiman, and the membership of the Czech academic František Ondraš, the Sudanese novelist Hammour Ziadeh, the Egyptian critic Muhammad Shair, and the Palestinian researcher Sonia Nimr.

The long list included 16 novels: Muhammad Abdel-Nabi and the novel “Almost Every Day” – Egypt, Ahmed Al-Morsi, the novel “A Gamble in Honor of Lady Mitsi” – Egypt, Rima Bali, the novel “Khatem Selimi” – Syria, Badriya Al-Badri, the novel “Fombi” – Oman, Saleh Al-Hamad. The novel “The Kite’s Eye” – Saudi Arabia, by Bassem Khandakji, and the novel “A Mask in the Color of the Sky” – Palestine, Sufyan Rajab, and the novel “The Reader of Nahj Al-Dabbagheen” – Tunisia, Amin Al-Zawi, and the novel “Idols” – Algeria, Sarah Al-Sarraf, for the novel “I Heard Everything” – Iraq, Rashid Al-Daif for the novel “The Other Side of the Shadow” Lebanon, Raja Alem for the novel “Bahubal: Mecca Multiverse 1945-2009” Saudi Arabia, Saleha Obaid and the novel “Circle of Spice” UAE, Asma Al-Issa and the novel “The Seventh Sky of Jerusalem” Palestine, Durrat Al-Ghaza and the novel “Hide” Al-Hawa” Tunisia, Ahmed Munawar and the novel “Storm on the Islands” Algeria, Issa Nasiri and the novel “Mosaic” Morocco.

It is noteworthy that the International Prize for Arabic Fiction is sponsored by the Abu Dhabi Center for the Arabic Language, and the winning novel will be announced on April 28.

The International Prize for Arabic Fiction, or as it is called the “Arab Booker Prize,” is one of the most prestigious literary awards in the Arab world, and the award is supported by the Booker Prize Foundation in London.
