The Italian Defense Minister, who along with Indonesia is one of the largest contributors to UNIFIL forces in Lebanon, summoned the Israeli ambassador, after soldiers were injured in an Israeli bombing.
The United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, announced on Thursday that “Israeli tank fire opened fire on its headquarters in the south of the country, wounding two of its members, and accused Israel of bombing its positions “repeatedly.”
UNIFIL said in a statement: “This morning, two peacekeepers were injured after an Israeli army Merkava tank fired its weapon at a watchtower at UNIFIL headquarters in Naqoura, hitting it directly and causing them to fall.”
She added that the two peacekeepers were not seriously injured, “but they are still in the hospital.”
UNIFIL confirmed that “the recent escalation along the Blue Line is causing widespread destruction of cities and villages in southern Lebanon, while rockets continue to be launched towards Israel, including civilian areas.”
She continued: “We remind the IDF and all actors of their obligations to ensure the safety and security of United Nations personnel and property and to respect the sanctity of United Nations buildings at all times,” noting that “UNIFIL peacekeeping forces are present in southern Lebanon to support the return to stability in accordance with the mandate of the Council.” Security.”
In its statement, UNIFIL stressed that “any deliberate attack on peacekeeping forces constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law and Security Council Resolution 1701.”
UNIFIL also indicated in its statement that “Israeli army soldiers deliberately opened fire on the surveillance cameras surrounding the site and disabled them. They also deliberately opened fire on (a site) where regular tripartite meetings were held before the conflict began, which led to the destruction of the lighting and the repeater station.” .
Last week, UNIFIL said, “The Israeli army, before it began its ground operations inside Lebanon, asked the peacekeeping forces to ‘move’ from some locations.”
In a related context, Hezbollah announced, today, Thursday, that it had targeted a force of Israeli army soldiers while it was trying for the third time to withdraw casualties from a targeted vehicle in the Ras Naqoura area, with a missile launcher.
Hezbollah said in a statement: “In support of our steadfast Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and in support of their valiant and honorable resistance, and in defense of Lebanon and its people, the Mujahideen of the Islamic Resistance targeted, at 05:00 this afternoon, Thursday, October 10, 2024, a force Israeli enemy soldiers while trying for the third time to remove casualties from the targeted vehicle in the Ras Naqoura area with a missile strike.”
Today, Hezbollah carried out several operations against Israel, amid a major escalation between the two sides, as the Israeli army bombed various areas in Lebanon in an operation dubbed “Arrows of the North.”
