Legambiente says no to the popular consultation on bears in Val di Sole – News

TRENTO. Legambiente popular consultation on bears rejected that this will be held Sunday in the 13 municipalities of Val di Sole. “The coexistence of man and wild animals is not practiced by means of referendum questions already oriented towards simplistic solutions and, above all, in the absence of a clear admission of responsibility on the part of the institutions and politicians, local but not only, who have not been able to manage with the necessary tools a complex phenomenon that cannot be reduced to a simple yes or no on coexistence”, comments the biodiversity manager of Legambiente Stefano Raimondi in a note.

“In nature, zero risk does not exist. When wildlife begins to return, naturally or following reintroductions, in areas from which it had disappeared for decades, problems of coexistence begin to arise, in particular when it comes to large carnivores (bears and wolves ) which in many re-colonization areas are perceived as a threat to people and farmed animals. It is clear that these ‘new conditions’ require a holistic approach for animals management interventions that must be supported by research and based on evidence and a scientific approach“.

Raimondi concludes by stating that “fauna management, in light of climate change and the influence it generates on species and habitats, requires an approach based on knowledge, monitoring of activities and integrated intervention with increasingly complex measures. For as regards Pacobace, the scientific and political tool that allows us to intervene to manage the complexity of coexistence and which provides adequate responses, we remember that it could be improved if local politics facilitated prevention and coexistence, a difficult and continually updated practice, rather than stoking divisions and fear.”
