Leonardo DiCaprio Named TIME’s 2025 Entertainer of the Year
A celebration of cinematic innovation and a career defined by compelling performances,Leonardo DiCaprio has been selected as TIME magazine’s 2025 Entertainer of the Year. The 102-year-old publication recognized the Academy Award winner for his critically acclaimed role in One Battle After Another, a film that has quickly become the highest-grossing work from director Paul Thomas Anderson.
The honor comes as DiCaprio is once again a frontrunner in the awards season, building momentum for his portrayal of a complex character grappling with a troubled past. He previously secured a Best Actor Oscar in 2015 for his harrowing performance in The Revenant.
One Battle After Another centers on a washed-up ex-revolutionary, haunted by paranoia, whose life is upended by the return of a long-lost adversary – portrayed by Sean Penn – after a sixteen-year absence. According to the actor, the film’s appeal lies in its originality. “I’ve been thinking a lot about how often there have been truly original story ideas like this, with no link to anything historical, no past characters, no genre, no vampires, no ghosts, no anything,” DiCaprio shared with TIME. “It was somewhat risky for the studio to take this on, and what they’re banking on, I think, is the appeal of Paul’s storytelling and the sort of fierce originality of his process.”
The accolades for both DiCaprio and One Battle After Another are rapidly accumulating. Just this Monday, DiCaprio received a Golden Globe nomination, adding to a recent Critics Choice Award nomination, a National Board of Review win, and a Desert Palm Achievement Award from the Palm Springs Film Festival. The film itself is also in contention for Best Film at both the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, having already secured wins at the Gotham Awards and from the los Angeles and New York Film Critics.
TIME will announce its Person of the Year on Thursday, December 18th, and its Breakthrough Artist and Athlete of the year on tuesday, December 16th. This announcement follows a recent TIME cover featuring donald Trump, which sparked conversation after the former president publicly criticized a previous photographic portrait.
DiCaprio’s selection as entertainer of the Year underscores a remarkable year for the actor and a testament to the power of bold, original storytelling in contemporary cinema.
